On 30 July 1966, England's greatest team reached the pinnacle of the world game, lifting the glimmering gold Jules Rimet trophy in front of 96,924 fans at Wembley Stadium. England started off with a 0-0 draw against Uruguay, then defeated Mexico and France to advance from Group One. The Three Lions beat Argentina in a tempestuous encounter, before dispatching Portugal and the great Eusebio in the semi-final.
England faced West Germany in the final - still the most famous match in English football history. Sir Geoff Hurst notched a hat-trick and Martin Peters bagged the other as England ran out 4-2 victors.
England's legendary captain Bobby Moore led his heroes up the 39 steps to the Royal Box, wiping his muddy hands when he noticed the Queen's white gloves. He said just one word as Her Majesty handed him the World Cup: ""Marvellous!"".
England were World Champions.
